Lesson Plan Chapters 16 to 18 - Grade 2

LESSON PLAN

GRADE 2

CHAPTERS 16, 17, 18 (MARCH 21, 2009)

 

 

There is no prayer service in church on March 21st.  The 3 chapters focus on the Mass (Liturgy):  gathering: listening and responding to God’s Word; the gifts of bread and wine, praising and thanking God, praying the Our Father, and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion.

 

CHAPTER 16

 

Pages 139A, 139D in Guide – read Background and Connections.

 

  • Invite the children to gather in the prayer space with their books.  Give time to open books to page 139.  Go through the prayer under “We Gather”.

 

  • Children return to their places.

 

  • Open books to page 140.  Teacher or aide reads “We Believe”.

 

  • Have three volunteers read the three paragraphs on page 140.

 

  • Children follow the directions for the activity, (pg. 140). (We are able to stay close to Jesus by praying to him, and by sharing his love with others.)

 

  • Remind children of the third commandment: “Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.”  For us, every Sunday is the Lord’s Day.

 

Page 141:

 

  • Ask a volunteer to read aloud the first 2 paragraphs on page 141.

 

  • All read aloud together the list of what we do when we gather for Mass.

 

  • Invite the children to share ideas to the questions: “How can you live Sunday as the Lord’s Day?”

 

  • Ask the “Quick Check” questions – Guide, bottom of page 141.

 

Page 142:

 

  • Key word:  Assembly – write on board. Read aloud the first paragraph

 

  • Volunteers read the remaining paragraphs – page 142. (Return to Master 16 – vestments, later in the lessons.)

 

Page 143:

 

  • Read the opening paragraph.  Read together how we take part in the beginning of Mass.  Underline the words we pray.

 

Page 144:

 

  • Guide the children in answering questions 1 through 4.

 

 

 

 

 

CHAPTER 17

 

Pages 147A, 147D in Guide – read Background and Connections.

 

Concentrate on covering pages 148-151, so you can continue on to Chapter 18.

 

Page 148

 

  • Write on the board:  “Liturgy of the Word.”  Pronounce the words and have the children repeat them.  (Use the definition under “Key Words” on page 149.)  
    • o Stress:  “When we listen to God’s word at Mass, we are worshiping Him.  Listening to God’s word at Mass helps us to grow in faith and love for God and others.

 

Have volunteers read page 148, and help them unscramble the letters of the missing word.

 

Page 149

 

    • Read the statement at the top of page 149.

 

    • A volunteer can read the first paragraph 

 

    • Have the class underline the third sentence:  “We hear about …before Jesus was born.”

 

    • Write the key word psalm on the board. Explain that this song of praise is read or sung after the first reading.

 

    • Third paragraph underline:  “It is about …of the Church.”

 

    • Continue reading the remaining paragraphs on page 149.  Have the class underline the response to the first and second readings: “Thanks be to God”.

 

    • Under “As Catholics,” mention to the class that many of the letters in the New Testament were written by Saint Paul

 

    • Go over “Quick Check” questions – Guide bottom page 149.

 

Page 150

 

    • Write the word, “gospels” on the board.  There are four gospels in the New Testament. They are named after Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

 

    • The third reading of the Liturgy of the Word is from one of the gospels.

 

    • Write the word, ”proclaim” on the board.  Read aloud the second paragraph on page 150. Ask the children to stand with their books open to, pg150.  Read aloud together what we do when the gospel is proclaimed.  Children sit down after reading.

 

    • Write the word, “Homily”, on the board. (key word) Pronounce it for the children and have them repeat it.  A volunteer can read the last paragraph on page 150.  Discuss how the homily gives us a better understanding of how to be followers of Jesus.

 

Page 151

 

    • Introduce the words, “creed” and “prayer of the faithful”.  The teacher, or a good reader, may read page 151.

 

    1. Read the “We Respond” directions and invite the children to check their responses.

 

    1. Distribute copies of Master 17. The children may work in pairs to complete the activity.  (Answers are in the Guide at bottom of pg.151)

 

 

 

 

 

CHAPTER 18

 

Page 155A&155D – Read Background and Connections, (Guide)

 

Page 156:

 

    • Write “Liturgy of the Eucharist” on the board.  Read aloud the first paragraph on page 156.  Have the children read aloud the definition of Liturgy of the Eucharist in the Key Words Box on page 157.

 

    • Volunteers can read the remaining paragraphs on page 156.  Have the children underline the words we pray as the priest prepares the gifts.(“Blessed be God Forever”)

 

    • Play “A Gift From Your Children”, #16-Grade 2 CD. Have the children circle our gifts to God named in the song. (bread, wine, love)

 

Page 157:

    • Write “Eucharistic Prayer” on the board. Explain the Eucharistic Prayer is the most important prayer in the Mass.  Volunteers can read the first two paragraphs on page 157.  Teacher reads what the priest says over the bread and wine.  The children circle the words of the priest, (pg.157)

 

    • The priest says the same words that Jesus said to his disciples during the Last Supper.

 

    • Write the word, “consecration”, on the board. Say the word, and have the children say it.

 

    • Read the “Read Along” section slowly, (pg.157) Have the children read along or follow silently.

 

    • Go over the “Quick Check” on page 157, (guide at bottom)

 

    • Check your time left for this class session.  You may continue, or use Master 18 – with Grade 2 CD - #17 “Jesus, You are Bread for Us”.  Pages 158,159 may be covered now, if time permits, or at the beginning of your next class.

 

Page 158:

 

All read aloud the statement at the top of page 158.  The Our Father is a prayer Jesus taught us. When we pray these words at Mass, we join ourselves with the whole church.  Read the first paragraph.

 

    • Read the other paragraphs on page 158. Explain:  We should be prayerful and respectful when sharing the sign of peace with others.

 

    • Ask:  What is another word for mercy? (Forgiveness)

 

    • Read together the words of the “Lamb of God…”.

 

    • We share the sign of peace at Mass to show that we are united to Christ and to one another.

 

Page 159:

 

    • Read the text aloud.  Have the children underline the responses we pray.

 

    • Talk about what is happening in the photographs on pages 158-159.

 

    • When we go forward to receive Holy Communion, we should be respectful.  We may receive the Host in the hand or on the tongue. After receiving Holy Communion, we have a quiet time to pray, and thank Jesus for giving Himself to us in Holy Communion.
