    RELIGIOUS EDUCATION POLICY

Responsibility of Parents:

Parental involvement and support of the Catechists in the Religious Education program is essential.

THE LIMITED TIME AVAILABLE FOR THESE PROGRAMS MAKES IT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY TO SET PRIORITIES AND TO GIVE THEM ACTIVE SUPPORT. "The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute." (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2221)

By enrolling your child in our Religious Education Program you agree to:

Family Prayer:

It is our hope that you will take some time out of your frantic family schedule to remember that the God of Love is in your midst. "The Christian family is the first place of education in prayer. Based on the sacrament of marriage, the family is the "domestic church" where God’s children learn to pray "as the Church" and to persevere in prayer. For young children in particular, daily family prayer is the first witness of the church’s living memory as awakened by the Holy Spirit." (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2685)

Participation at Mass and the Sacraments:

Attend Weekend Liturgies and Holy Days of Obligation. It is of utmost importance that families worship together. Our prayer together as a community of faith is the life blood of our church. For us to grow together as a community of faith we must worship together.

Why go to Mass? Because Jesus told us: "Do this in memory of Me"

In the Bible, Jesus’ apostle Paul writes: " For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’"(1Corinthians11:23-25)

We owe Jesus everything, and he asked us to celebrate Mass. It is just that simple. When our community, ‘the Church’ stresses gathering at Mass for worship, it is doing what Paul did long ago in the passage from First Corinthians, handing on what Jesus ordained. In the end, going to Mass is not a law that some old people made up. It is a specific request from the person who died so that we might live.

Absenteeism and Tardiness:

Regular attendance for all classes is vital for students in our programs. Only 2 unexcused absences will be allowed. A note to the teacher explaining absence is required. Parents must make sure that the student makes up all class work and brings completed work to the following session. Grade 5-8 students are respopnsible for obtaining any missed work at the next class.   All students are expected to be current in their work before proceeding to the next grade level.

Excused Absences: Illness of the student, family medical emergency or death of a family member. All other absences will be considered unexcused.

If your child has an excused absence please call during office hours (8:30 am to 3:00 PM Mon -Fri) or during time of Religious Education. (696-8307)

Tardiness: A student will be marked late if not in the classroom at the beginning of class. Only 2 late arrivals will be excused. Latecomers are to report to the school office before going to classroom. Only 2 early dismissals will be excused.

They will receive a "consequence", which is a question that asks them to consider their behavior in light of the gospel message. They will have to write out their answer and bring it home for you to sign and discuss with them. You will also receive a phone call advising you of the problem, so that you can assist in correcting the situation.

If your child has a second behavioral problem, you will be contacted and your presence will be required for a conference at the end of class time.

If your child has a third behavioral problem, he/she will be suspended from classes. Your presence will be required that evening. You will be required to attend the next three sessions with your child. You will be provided with materials so that you can instruct your child in the current lessons. At the end of the third session another conference will be held with you, your child, and coordinator to determine if your child is ready to return to his/her regular class. Your child will be asked to withdraw from the program if behavioral problems continue.
